Warrawee Ideal wins the Battle of Waterloo in Thriller Finish
ELORA, ON — Warrawee Ideal granted trainer Carl Jamieson his fifth Battle of Waterloo victory at Grand River Raceway on August 7.
In a very tight finish, Warrawee Ideal passed stablemate Test Flight in the final strides. He captured the $300,000 race by a mere nose in 1:56.4.
Warrawee Ideal, owned by trainer Carl Jamieson, the George Arthur Stable, Fred Brayford and Robin Raine, entered the Battle as the betting favourite. He won his elimination race a week earlier in a new divisional track record time of 1:55.3.
Fellow Jamieson trainee Test Flight and Mark MacDonald finished second, followed closely by Twin B Survivor with Paul MacDonell for trainer/owner Jack Darling of Cambridge.
Carl Jamieson, of Princeton, ON has won the Battle of Waterloo every other year since its inception in 1998 at Elmira Raceway. Warrawee Ideal is Jody Jamieson’s third winning drive in the race’s nine-year history.
The Battle of Waterloo is contested by two-year-old Ontario sired pacers. It is the feature race of Grand River Raceway’s signature event, Industry Day, celebrating the harness racing industry.
Other Industry Day winners on the 11-race card included two divisional track record-setters.
Three-year-old trotting colt Upfront Navigator shaved one full second off the former record with a 2:00 finish in race one. As anticipated, Abbey Road C and driver/trainer Keith Jones also set a new record for aged trotting horses with a 1:56.3 finish in the feature trotting dash. It was the champion’s 40th lifetime win, pushing him past $1.4 million in earnings.
Australian Stock and driver Chris Christoforou took the $130,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold final for rookie trotting colts. It was the colt’s first lifetime win for trainer Roy Jeffries and owner Charalambos Christoforou.
