ABOUT THE CAMPS:The three-day camps are co-hosted by the Ontario Harness Horse Association and provide participants with a unique, hands-on learning experience, in addition to classroom sessions with industry professionals and officials.
Past participants in the camp were current, new and potential Standardbred horse owners.
Participants will spend two to three hours each day learning the finer points of grooming, harnessing, jogging, and shoeing.
The classroom agenda topics include: anatomy, basic care, horse health check, nutrition, horsemanship, stable management, conditioning, finances, fractional ownership and veterinary care.
The camp includes transportation, dinner and racing at a nearby track on the Saturday night of camp weekend, and a field trip to a local breeding farm on Sunday afternoon.
The Standardbred Xtreme Camp will culminate with two live exhibition races during race night at Grand River (September 27), in which participants will be paired with a pro driver in a half-mile dash.
The inclusive cost for the camp is $300 (including meals) and is limited to eight participants.
